My New Favorite Service For Streaming Music

I have been a strong user of Pandora for many months now. I had been using their Mac application Pandora Jam, and was impressed. It was so simple to just load up a song choice, or artist, and let go. I used to plug in one of my favorite old school bands Alice In Chains and the fun and nostalgia ensued.

Anyway, the only thing lacking from Pandora was really good film scores. Since I’m a long time fan of sound track composers like John Williams and Danny Elfman. I was always very disappointed when I plugged in one of their names to Pandora. I got a very limited selection of music, with classical music thrown in as well – disappointing. Then someone posted on friendfeed that they were listening to Qui-Gon’s Noble End on Last.fm!

Next stop: Last.fm.

I plugged in artist John Williams and low and behold, I was listening to a fantastic mix of film scores. From John Williams to John Powell (Bourne series), James Horner to Jerry Goldsmith, and many others. I was shocked with joy, and have been enjoying Last.fm ever since.

Finally a great source for Film scores: Last.fm

A couple notes:

  • Even non-film scores are better on last.fm: One thing I noticed after switching is that Last.fm’s song selection is much larger. Even when I plugged in names like Metallica, or John Lennon I noticed Pandora would often repeat a small list of songs. Last.fm on the other hand has stayed consistently fresh, not repeating as often.
  • Unfortunately I didn’t get much mileage out of their Windows Mobile app, where as the Pandora app for Windows Mobile works great.

The things that i the most at last.fm are it’s recommendation algorithm, social networking factor and great sound engine.

Nice choice of music, by the way. I was hardcore metalhead till i found Chris Spheeris, Amethystium, Yanni and some other instrumental/new-age musicians.

Gradually, i started listening to every related music genre, from celtic, gregorian, downtempo to trip-hop, chillout, and film music.

Danny Elfman did a great job at Fable I&II soundtracks. Another composers i like are Max Richter, Joe Hisaishi, Phillip Glass, …

Nice! I haven’t heard Elfman’s scores to Fable yet, but have heard they are great. I love most of his music, Edward Scissorhands is one of my absolute favorites. I agree with the social networking factor of last.fm, I really enjoy that as well.
